Where
is Isla Solarte?
Isla Solarte is an island
in the Bocas del Toro archipelago and it is approximately 3 miles long
and less than a half mile across at its widest point. The waters surrounding
it are always calm due to its position next to Bastimentos (its much larger
neighboring island) which fully protects it from the open Caribbean. It
sits about 9 miles off the coast of Panama and is part of an archipelago
of over 100 islands that begin at the border with Costa Rica and hug the
Panamanian caribbean coast for miles. While the surrounding area as a whole
is virtually undeveloped, Bocas del Toro, the capital city of the province,
sits a mile away on the neighboring island of Colon (named for Christopher
Columbus, who visited there in 1502).
What
is the weather like on Isla Solarte? Do I have to worry about tropical
storms or hurricanes
The climate of Isla Solarte
is very similar to the Hawaiian Islands. The average air temperature is
in the low 80’s, water temperature is in the low 80’s, light breezes flow
from the northeast and northwest from 5 to 15 knots and there is no history
of tropical storms or hurricanes during the last 140 years. The climate
is consistent throughout the year with many sunny days. Rainfall is approximately
100 inches per year and often occurs at night with short showers during
the day, similar to Hawaii. The vegetation on Isla Solarte is lush and
green all year long.
What
kind of tropical property is available on Isla Solarte?
Isla Solarte rises over
one hundred feet out of the ocean with a variety of hilltops, ridges, and
gentle slopes that provide views of a half dozen neighboring islands as
well as the Panamanian coastline. The following types of property are available:
homes
built on stilts out over the water, waterfront lots with immediate
access to the water and available docks, view lots back from the
water with beautiful view of the water, ridge lots with panoramic
views of the Caribbean (ranging from 75 to 100 feet above sea level), and
lovely
green privacy lots with beautiful views of the rain forest. None of
the lots are more than a few minutes walk from the water.
The island has a beautiful
rain forest where every shade of green is represented. The hundreds of
varieties of trees create a forty foot canopy that spreads filtered sunlight
over the ferns and countless species of plants that cover its forest floor.
As you walk the island, the only sounds you hear come from the many birds
that inhabit it. It is believed that over 300 species of birds live on
these islands, and no dangerous critters of any kind.
What
kind of transport is available to/from Isla Solarte? What are the nearest
airports/seaports?
The nearest airport is on
the neighboring island of Isla Colon, in Bocas del Toro, the capitol city.
Water taxi’s make regular trips back and forth between Solarte and Bocas
Del Toro, a 5-10 minute boat ride.
Do
